Personal Planning Personal Support
|
Establishing and maintaining a healthy personal support network is really important to you as an individual as well as your business. Your personal support network will help you stay focused, motivated and on-track. Additionally, you can use some of the folks in your personal support network as trusted advisors.
Before we discuss friends and family, we want to highlight the most important member of your personal support network - YOU! You must be your own biggest fan and cheerleader at all times. While having a solid support network is important, you must hold yourself accountable for being your own best friend in business.

Most small business owners, by virtue, are driven individuals. They have a need to succeed. Perfectionism and control are often key traits for the new small business owner. When these traits are allowed free reign in the business, trouble lies ahead! You are going to make mistakes in your business and you are not going to be in control of every thing that happens.
Give yourself some room to learn and grow as an individual and small business owner. Accept mistakes as learning opportunities and move on. If you make the same mistakes several times, you're probably just overwhelmed. Slow down, evaluate the situation and figure out why the mistakes keep happening. At all costs, however, don't beat yourself up. Keep motivated and keep on keepin' on!
We encourage you to form a healthy personal support network with positive family and friends as well. These individuals will help keep you motivated and will also be helpful to discuss new ideas or problems you might face in your business.
We all have certain family members or friends who can be negative at times. Perhaps all the time! Your personal support network should consist of only those close to you who will offer you encouragement and support. We aren't saying here that you should surround yourself with people who agree with everything you say or do...quite the contrary! The value of your support team is in the fact that you trust them and their opinions even when they go against your own.
What we do want to be clear about is that you distance yourself from anyone who consistently brings negative energy. It's a sad fact but we all likely have friends or even family who don't want us to succeed. Fair-weather friends are happiest when we are miserable like they are. You don't need these friends at this stage of your life or business.
Establish a healthy personal support network early on in your business startup endeavors. Meet with these people regularly to talk through new ideas or challenges that you may have. Try out new techniques on their cars and ask for feedback. Use your personal support network to its fullest potential - these people will want to do everything they can to help you succeed.
